Templates

Outlines can be saved as templates, which can then be used as starting points for new documents. Templates preserve everything about an outline, including its content, its styles, and its document preferences.
To save an outline as a template:
  • Select File ‣ Save As...
  • Choose OmniOutliner 3 Template from the File Format pop-up menu.
To create a new outline from a template, just open it like you would any other file. OmniOutliner creates a new, untitled copy of it for you to work on, and leaves the template as it is.
There is also a default new document template, which is used for any new outline that is not explicitly created from a saved template. If you always like to have certain styles or document settings the same way, you can set them in the document template so that every new outline will start out that way. To set up the default template:
  • Select Preferences... from the OmniOutliner menu.
  • In the General preferences pane, click the Edit New Document Template button; the default template outline will open.
  • Edit the outline structure, styles, and settings to the way you want new documents to start out.
  • Select File ‣ Save; now any new documents you create without specifying another template will use this default template.
OmniOutliner Professional has a separate Save As Template... command in the File menu, which will save the outline to a special location in your Library folder. You can save templates wherever you like, but templates saved in this folder (~/Library/Application Support/The Omni Group/OmniOutliner/Templates/) will be available from OmniOutliner Professional's File ‣ New From Template command.
